at the threshold

Max supposed nothing was exactly where he wanted it to be at the moment.

A part of him had hoped he'd have come clean with his congregation, already. He really wish he could tell them the truth about Chris, but he supposed that would have done no one any good. Why was it like that?

Perhaps if they knew, he wouldn't be right here at the church this morning, staring at that red heart just behind the pulpit.

He was tired from working at the hospital. Tired of staying up late with Chloe. And yet, he knew it was worth it. Really, he had to keep believing that. And yet, this falseness wore him down the most.

How would he ever get out of this now without it tumbling down all around him? It didn't help to have so much going on, either. It was trying. And he knew some were upset with him that he didn't have more sermons happening at church. What about Sunday evening? Wednesday evenings? He wasn't quite sure he could do it all himself, anymore. But who would help? He'd just have to pray about it, but that really hadn't helped much, lately.

So much had let him down with the adoption. Although, when he was nursing, he did try to be a pastor to patients when his shift was over. Yet, he felt as if he were in a tailspin here. It was just a matter of time before it all crashed and burned. Then what?

Max was about to practically melt into tears as he stared at that heart, so simple and pure. Just then he heard the door in the main entrance open. Someone was here in the late afternoon. No one stopped by this time of day.

Max turned back to see that it was guy that he'd seen Dayton with.

Oh, Geoff! They met at the hospital, didn't they?
Max and Chris are so different... Like Jack and Ennis in Brokeback Mountain. Hey, I'm not comparing or anything, sorry. :)
