Each hour Oliver could see Bex a bit more timid.
While Bex was reading a text book on creative nonfiction development for the library, Oliver managed to get away for an hour or so to Nelson's to pick up the good stuff.
"Sound's like trouble," Nelson told Oliver. "Can you handle trouble like that, my friend?"
Oliver just smiled, but then he'd had most of a cigarette already that was just about to sink in.
"I'm totally there for Bex, you know." He was wide-eyed and full lipped, wishing he could kiss Bex right now.
"Yeah, well, what in the hell are you doing here?"
They both laughed. Maybe the best way to approach all this was being a bit stoned. He decided now.
"I might need more, you know, cause we might really have to celebrate our love once the asshole is gone," Oliver told him, squinting hard to take in the cigarette.
"Yeah, well..what are you gonna do if she ain't as addictive to this shit as you are?" Nelson gave him a stare down then.
"I am not addicted!" Oliver was appalled by this, but then he laughed, "You can not get addicted to this stuff." Of course, while he was saying this he felt dreamy and terribly spontaneous.
"Whatever, you just better get your ass back there and be there for the girl , or all this shit is gonna hit you right in the face." Nelson's last advice.
Oliver staggered a bit. Nelson shook his head. "Come on, let me get you back to Bex."
Oliver got a phone call on the way. It was the library.
"Jesus Christ," he said just staring at the phone number on his cell, what in the hell could they possibly want on a Sunday afternoon. "Hullo?" He stared wide eyed for the longest time. Finally he clicked the cell off.
"Did they fire you?" Nelson asked taking a corner toward Bex's street in his beat up van.
"Nope." Oliver looked about taking in Nelson neon carpet on the interior of the van. "Is this your love machine?"
"What did they tell you?"
"I have to be at work at eight a.m. tomorrow morning." He slightly squinted as if he wasn't sure where they were going.
"Yeah, well, will just see how smart you are come morning." Nelson said and Oliver gave Nelson a sleepy smile. Everything was going to be all right.
