guiding and gaurding

Max wanted to run back to the last pew to Chris and just put his arm around him, but he couldn't. It was out of the question. He knew now perhaps he'd asked too much of him. Hadn't he?

It was hard to keep going with the sermon. It was all falling apart, wasn't it? And if everyone knew how he really felt, then perhaps everyone would have felt so cheated, wouldn't they?

Yet it wasn't that anything had happened. It hadn't. There was no real reason to worry. Yet, deep down, he knew he was in love, and he so wanted it to be God's love. Not any other kind of love. It was love. Truly. Genuine. Not some school boy crush. It wasn't. It wasn't like that at all, but here it was coming at him ready to confront him. Just what was he going to do?

So "Just as I am," started. And some were coming to pray. It was good to see so many here wanting to reach out to others. Granted, he hadn't had much sorrow in his sermon to move many. Just one, actually, Chris.

Maybe he would not come to this invitation. Maybe he would. The song slowly played on quietly. Max kept quiet. He knew he was suppose to be jabbing the air with words of what one must do to make it right with God. Talk of Salvation and being on the right path. Did he really believe that now?

Finally, on the last verse, here came Chris, still choking on tears. He said something then, Max wasn't sure if he understood. Completely. Of course, when Max touched his back he thought Chris might go into a convulsion.

He just shook his head, no.

"It'll be all right," Max assured him, "You've taken the first step toward salvation. You want to let Christ into your life."

Chris sort of nodded.

Max smiled then. He looked up then and saw Oliver next Chris. He looked back at Bex who was still in the pew. She looked completely frightened. Finally, she came down the isle too.

I'd find it hard to go on with a sermon too if someone was crying. Even if it was someone I didn't know. Max is in love. And so is Chris, I think. I really think one of them should take the first step and say something, or they'll regret for ever that they haven't. I think Bex is the only one who is still a bit excluded from this world of the Serenity Church..
